Child Rescued from House Fire

Published: January 1, 2005

A local boy is recovering after a close call Thursday night. Firefighters rescued the child as fire ripped through his home on Hamilton in central Toledo. The blaze broke out around 10:30. When crews arrived on the scene, the child’s mother told them that she had escaped with one child, ran next door to call 9-1-1, and left two others inside.

“She said my house is on fire. I said, what? She said, I have two kids in that house. She had one little boy on her hip,” said Amos Powell, a neighbor. As firefighters worked to save the children, one of the boys ran out of the back of the house. The other was apparently still sleeping inside.

Another neighbor, Juanita Hicks, witnessed the mother’s distress. “I seen the girl that live there,” she said. “She was screaming and I was worried about her kids, if her kids was alright.” Fire crews were able to get the boy out; he is expected to be fine.

No one else was hurt in the blaze, and firefighters say they are not sure where the mother was when the fire started. Its cause is being investigated as well.
