Last old passenger rail car rescued
Published: December 31, 2004
A group of historical enthusiasts hopes to restore a piece of Texas transportation history from a pile of rusted, abandoned junk rescued from a pasture.
Car 524 is touted as the last surviving electric interurban passenger car from what once was a thriving commuter rail line lining Houston with what is now Baytown.
Starting in 1927, the Houston North Shore Railway provided high-speed service between Houston and the oil field town of Goose Creek, that’s now part of Baytown.
Car 524 made its last official trip in 1948. It was bought by a company that used it as office space in Channelview.
Its restoration is the work of the Highlands Heritage Museum and Preservation Project. The results — which could take years to achieve — will be displayed in a downtown park in Highlands, a town just northwest of Baytown that was a stop on the line.
