Paralyzed dog gets donated wheelchair

Published: December 30, 2004

A paralyzed dog in Raeford can get around on her own again.

The Haven, a no-kill animal shelter, took in the dog about three weeks ago. Someone had shot the beagle and left her for dead.

Now, thanks to a Raleigh veterinary clinic, Emmy Lou is healthy again.

The Falls Village Veterinary Hospital heard about Emmy Lou and donated a doggie wheelchair.

The beagle learned how to use the cart and now the animal shelter has a new job in mind for her. They want to train her as a therapy dog and take her into hospitals and nursing homes.

“This is a dog with incredible courage and heart and a resiliency,” said The Haven’s Director Linden Spears. “She’s just a model to us all. She’s just the most wonderful creature I’ve ever met.”

The one-year-old still has the bullet lodged in her body.
