Man Rescued after 24-Hour Cliff Face Ordeal

Published: December 30, 2004

A man was rescued today after being trapped 100ft up a cliff for more than 24 hours.

The 38-year-old man became stuck on cliffs at Worbarrow Tout, between Lulworth Cove and Kimmeridge, Dorset, which he had attempted to climb after getting cut off by the tide at 3pm yesterday.

He was reported missing at 5am today by his wife after he failed to return to their home in Wimborne, a police spokesman said.

A search was mounted involving a police boat and a coastguard helicopter but the man’s whereabouts were only discovered after a member of the public reported that his Bedford camper van had been parked next to the church in the hamlet of Steeple, near Kimmeridge, since the day before.

A police spokesman said that the man might not have survived a second night trapped on the cliff.

Superintendent David Griffith of Dorset Police said: “This was a fine example of the public, the coastguard and the police working together to save a life.

“If the man had been out on that cliff face for a second night, I have no doubt that we would have been recovering a body.

“I would like to pay tribute to the man who called the police, pinpointing the location of the missing man’s van. This narrowed the area of the search – allowing the missing man to be found before it went dark.”
