Family reunited with their dog

About two years ago Todd Gookins and his wife Kathleen decided their friendly pit bull Tasha would be better off with another family.
“I do a lot of travel baseball, I have seven travel teams. And we were getting very busy. I umpire too and felt it was a shame for the dog to stay locked up in a house all day with no one here,” Gookins said.
Gookins says his family loved the dog but wanted to find a family that could give it more attention.
About three months ago his 9-year old daughter Alexa began asking for another dog for Christmas.
A few weeks later Gookins says his wife and kids made a lucky discovery.
“Behind my back they were looking in the Humane Society for animals and that’s when they saw a picture. They didn’t know if it was Tash or not Tash. As soon as I saw the picture I went storming right over there. I knew it was my dog,” he said.
Officials here at the Herkimer County Humane Society say that Tasha was picked up roaming the streets of Herkimer over a year ago.
They’re calling it a miracle that the Gookins were able to get their dog back.
“For a total of 14 months she was here. And she had some interest in her but it never panned out. She was a great dog and we knew the right family would come along. The thing is we didn’t know it was her actual family that would come along so we called it our little Christmas miracle story,” said Dottie Gaffey, Herkimer County Humane Society.
Both 14-year old Justin and 9-year old Alexa Gookins say they couldn’t be happier Tasha is back home.
“I’m very happy. I love the dog. I always loved her and I was just so happy once I got her back,” Justin said.
Alexa said, “She’s a loving and caring dog and I’m happy because she’s back forever and ever and ever until she dies.”
And if Tasha could talk she’d probably tell us she’s pretty happy too.
Todd Gookins says the dog recognized them right away. He says as soon as Tasha returned home it was like she never left.
