Australians donating $billions to charity

Published: December 12, 2004

Australians are donating billions of dollars to charities and non-profit organisations each year.

New Research led by the Australian Council of Social Service has found philanthropic Australians are giving away a record $US2 billion.

The President of ACOSS, Andrew McCallum, says federal government incentives like tax deductions have contributed to the generosity of the nation.

Mr McCallum says the research will be used to help the charity and non profit sector raise much needed funds.

“Once we get a profile of actually why people give, we can also, educate the sector about how best they can raise money through the community donations and through businesses,” he said.

Mr McCallum says it is also important for people to know about the work being undertaken by community organisations.
