Women Rescued in House Fire
Published: October 27, 2004
Two Marquette women are alive thanks to quick action by the Marquette Fire Department. A neighbor called the fire department at 3:00 a.m. Saturday. The fire trapped 66-year-old Mary Lee Sweeney, and 91-year-old Mary Basal in a back bedroom of this Fitch Street home.
The front portion of the house was engulfed when firefighters arrived. After knocking down the flames, one woman was taken out a window while the other was carried out a door.
“In my estimation I would say within a couple minutes, they would have been overcome by the smoke,” Fire Department Captain Dan Everson said. “Training was a big factor. The crew knew exactly what to do–made entry, found the victims, got them out immediately–and it was a fortunate situation all the way around.”
Both women were taken by ambulance to Marquette General Hospital, but have since been released.
