Rescued fishermen on dry ground

Published: October 27, 2004

Three rescued fishermen are touching down on land after a drama at sea off Cape Reinga.

They sent out a distress call at around 4am after their 16 metre boat caught fire off

They were forced to abandon ship, but got into a liferaft and set off an emergency locator beacon.

An Air Force Orion found them about 100 nautical miles out to sea and guided the Westpac rescue helicopter to them.

Helicopter manager Greg Brownson says the rescue has been successful and the men are all well.

The rescue crew managed to winch up all three from the life raft in the same trip.
