Three rescued after man swims 6km
Published: October 24, 2004
A man has had to swim 6.5 kilometres to raise the alarm after a boat with two other people on board capsized off Wollongong, south of Sydney.
The three men from Sydney’s south went fishing in their five metre boat when it took on water and capsized yesterday morning.
A 31-year-old man swam for more than five hours before he reached the shore and raised the alarm.
A search using a water police launch and the lifesaver rescue helicopter found a 24-year-old and a 30-year-old clinging onto the upturned dinghy about 30 minutes later.
They were both suffering hypothermia.
Police say they are the luckiest people alive, considering the offshore southerly sea current and the difficulty in locating them.
