Caring children show charity

Published: October 24, 2004

Charity: if you can, do. If you can’t do, give. If you can’t give, pray.

Assisting children in need has always been the aim of the Charity Club of Sekolah Sri Bunga Raya, and this year the students chose to help the children in Darfur, Sudan.

The club managed to raise RM555 over three weeks for the Darfur Children’s Fund through the help of students, staff and parents.

According to principal S. Karthigesu, the club members, aged between 10 and 16, had always been enthusiastic when it came to helping children and took the initiative to raise the funds.

They pasted news clippings and advertisements about the children in Darfur that had appeared in The Star and placed donation boxes in various parts of the school.

“I think it is very encouraging that the children are concerned about other children and recognise that they are fortunate to live in Malaysia,” Karthigesu added during the school’s annual concert yesterday.

Later, Malaysian Medical Relief Society (Mercy Malaysia) executive committee member Yang Wai Wai received the cheque from Mrs M. Arumugam, president of the RIMA Group of Colleges, of which Sekolah Sri Bunga Raya is a subsidiary.

In Ipoh, although the Canning Garden Methodist Kindergarten had already collected RM1,000, that did not stop it from making an effort to get more donations for the fund.

As a result, an extra RM539 poured in from parents and friends who attended the kindergarten’s annual concert on Oct 16.

Committee member Lim Kim Bee said the kindergarten chose to donate RM1,000 to the fund because it was a worthy cause.
