Climber rescued after 25m fall
Published: October 10, 2004
A rockclimber suffered serious injuries when he fell 25 metres down a cliff in the NSW Blue Mountains today.
He was rescued in a delicate three-hour operation.
The 40-year-old man was climbing at Sublime Point southeast of Leura with four others when he fell early today, said NRMA CareFlight, which was called about 10am (AEST).
He suffered a broken pelvis and spinal injuries.
Two friends had to climb to the top of the cliff, a popular spot with rockclimbers, to call for help.
A doctor, two paramedics and two Blue Mountains police rescue officers were then lowered to the man.
He had fallen onto a ledge below a sheer cliff face so the rescue party had to stabilise him, put him on a helicopter stretcher and lower him to the bottom of the cliff.
He was then carried to an area from where he could be safely lifted out.
