A guard at a Bahrain bank was shot twice in the legs yesterday as he wrestled with a bungling bank robber. The robber tried to slip into the Standard Chartered Bank in East Riffa disguised as a woman, dressed in an abaya, at about 3.15pm.But Pakistani guard Ashiq Hussain spotted him and barred his way, at which point he apparently pulled out a gun.
It is understood that Mr Hussain, who is in his 40s, was shot as he struggled to disarm the man.
The would-be robber fled and tried to drive away in a Honda Accord which he had parked nearby, as Mr Hussain shouted for help.
But a passing BDF officer saw what was going on and rammed his car into the gunman’s, said witnesses.
They said the robber leaped out and tried to run off, but was chased and caught by the BDF officer.
Passers-by reportedly joined in the struggle and helped restrain the gunman, said to be Bahraini.
Mr Hussain, who is employed by the Interior Ministry, was taken to the BDF Hospital.
He was later said to be in stable condition, according to an Interior Ministry statement.
He continued to struggle with the gunman despite being shot twice in the legs, said the statement, which did not name the bank.
Standard Chartered consumer banking head Maruf Ahmad said none of the staff nor any of the customers in the bank at the time were injured.
He said that bank staff remained in the bank in the evening to ensure that all steps were taken for it to open for business today.
