Fire awareness parade showcases local heroes

With sirens echoing through the streets and fire engines rolling past, hundreds of onlookers lined Sumter Street on Monday during a National Fire Prevention Week parade for a chance to see those who help protect the Columbia area.
“We are here honoring firefighters and teaching our children to respect our heroes,” said Madeline McMillion, principal at St. Peter’s Catholic School.
Students from the school held a sign saying “God Bless the Firefighters” during the parade, which featured the fire departments from Columbia, West Columbia, Cayce, Lexington County and Fort Jackson, as well as the Benedict College Marching Band of Distinction and the 282nd Army Band.
Students from St. John Baptist Church preschool also watched the parade.
Assistant Fire Chief Bradley Anderson of the Columbia Fire Department said the parade was another opportunity to talk about fire safety.
“… The best way to reduce fires is through fire safety education,” he said.
Fire officials said they are using National Fire Prevention Week to reach adults. Children are taught fire prevention in school, but it is the adults who can make the difference, they said.
