Eight-year-old leads Locks for Love collection effort
Published: October 5, 2004
Eight-year-old Hannah Tate is ready to grow up. Her mother, Julie, on the other hand, would rather wait just a little bit longer.
Hannah has been waiting to get her long, sandy blonde hair cut for quite a while now. When mom was getting her hair cut a few months ago, hair stylist Alisa Moore at New Image Hair Design told Hannah a story about little girls who would love to have hair like hers. Hannah was ready to get her hair cut that night, as she said she does not need it anymore. Mom tried to put this notion out of her head so that she may keep Hannah her “little girl.” That lasted a few months, but on Nov. 9, Hannah is scheduled to undergo her transformation.
Hannah has decided to donate her 14-inch pony tail to the Locks of Love program. Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that provides custom-fitted hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 that are suffering long-term medical hair loss. Most of the children receiving hairpieces are girls. Many of the girls wish to have long hair, and Hannah is ready to help them feel better about themselves. Children comprise more than 80 percent of the donors, making this a charity in which children have the opportunity to help other children.
Each hairpiece takes about four months to make and costs up to $3,000. It will take between six and 10 donated ponytails to make one hairpiece. The ponytails must be 10 to 12 inches long. The hair must be bundled in a ponytail or braided, and must be free of hair damage by chemical processing.
The Tates have been measuring Hannah’s hair for months, just waiting for it to reach at least 10 inches long. She has been talking with moms and dads, classmates, soccer teammates, relatives and neighbors about this opportunity to help kids. Hannah is in the second grade at Solomon Lutheran School. She is the daughter of Jeff and Julie Tate of Woodville, and she has a sister, Kalyn.
