Gracie Mansion event to honor unsung heroes
Published: October 4, 2004
Ten ordinary New Yorkers whose extraordinary contributions, creativity and courage epitomize the city’s unsung heroes will be awarded the New York Post’s Liberty Medals Thursday at a Gracie Mansion reception.
The event, hosted by Mayor Bloomberg and Post Publisher Lachlan Murdoch and emceed by Regis Philbin, will honor 10 everyday heroes with a symbol of the city’s gratitude for their service: a silver medal, depicting Liberty’s Torch, created for The Post by renowned graphic designer Milton Glaser.
The Post launched the Liberty Medals program in the wake of the tragedy of 9/11 as a way to acknowledge the deeds and decency of those who pitch in to help others without expecting any kudos.
Again this year, New Yorkers wholeheartedly embraced the opportunity to nominate their fellow citizens — those who unhesitatingly risk their lives on the front lines, as well as those who rush to offer a helping hand behind the scenes.
They told us about men, women and children who deserve the city’s applause for their spunk, compassion and desire to help others.
Post readers nominated candidates in 10 categories — from Community and Lifetime Achievement to Young Heart (for those under 17) — and one each for the city’s educators, firefighters and police officers.
