“Bionic” man’s charity mission
Published: October 4, 2004
A Scot serving with allied troops in Iraq has staged a superhuman feat of endurance to raise cash for a pal struck down by multiple sclerosis.
RAF Sergeant Chris McLaughlin - dubbed the Bionic Man - spent a gruelling 24 hours pounding equipment at the British forces base gym in Basra.
Soldiers from the UK, US, Holland and Italy cheered on the 32-year-old ironman from Clydebank as he ran 42 miles, cycled 93 miles, completed 36 miles on the cross-trainer and climbed 2677 floors on the step machine - burning off a staggering 20,000 calories.
Despite suffering severe stomach cramps after guzzling four pints of energy drink half-way through, 6ft fitness fanatic Chris recovered enough to finish in style.
He saved the best for last - finding the energy to run a half marathon in his final 90 minutes on the treadmill.
Chris said: ‘It was pretty knackering and I almost flaked out after I downed that muscle stimulant and protein halfway through.
‘But - - thanks to the support of the lads - I managed to pull it off.’
The 14-stone muscleman has managed to raise £1669 so far for his former RAF pal.
He said: ‘My mate’s life has been destroyed by MS. He was a real inspirational bloke, always happy and upbeat.
‘He’s a real proud man and didn’t even tell anyone he had MS.’
Hundreds of military personnel from bases across the Middle East have donated to the good cause.
Further donations can be made via RAF Honington, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk 1P31 1EE - cheques payable to SFAS and should have MS Charity written on the back.
