Miracle recovery for triplets’ mum
Published: October 2, 2004
A new mother who spent more than 100 days in a coma after giving birth to triplets has reportedly regained consciousness.
Monika Leskova, 33, of Slovakia, fell into a coma due to a rare complication which affected her blood vessels after giving birth to her three daughters and spent 102 days unconscious at Kosice Teaching Hospital in the east of the country.
She was attached to a kidney dialysis machine for 53 days.
Her husband Stefan, a car mechanic, never gave up hope that she would recover.
“My wife didn’t speak and it wasn’t clear whether she recognised me,” he told the Slovak daily Novy Cas.
The couple had tried for a baby for 11 years and Monika eventually became pregnant thanks to artificial insemination.
“This is a unique case in Slovakia. We can talk of this as a miracle since only 40 such cases have been recorded in the world,” Peter Belus, head doctor at the hospital’s anaesthesia and resuscitation department, told Novy Cas.
“A number of the patient’s vital organs stopped working but using all our powers, we saved her.”
Mrs Leskova’s condition has now improved so much that doctors say she could go home in one week.
Stefan’s sister Helena has been looking after the babies, Anicka, Barbora and Dorotka, since they were released from hospital.
