Woman, child rescued from canal

A 30-year-old woman and her young daughter were rescued by a Border Patrol agent as they struggled in the swift waters of a canal.
The woman and her 5-year-old were struggling in a canal east of the San Luis port of entry late Monday when an agent pulled them from the canal, said Joseph Brigman, Yuma sector Border Patrol spokesman.
Agents had become concerned about the canal, which moves water from the United States into Mexico under a water agreement, after four people drowned earlier in the month, Brigman said Wednesday.
In the drownings, the illegal immigrants apparently got caught in a grate as the water was moving swiftly. The water flow varies based on what the Bureau of Reclamation must send to Mexico, Brigman said.
As a result, BOR agreed to notify the Border Patrol when water flows were expected to increase so patrols could be added, Brigman said. The agent who rescued the mother and girl on Monday was sent to the canal area after BOR said it was increasing the water flow, he said.
The mother and child did not require medical attention and were returned to Mexico, Brigman said.
