Toddler rescued from pool

Published: September 30, 2004

A Chatham toddler was clinging to life on his second birthday yesterday after being found unconscious in a backyard pool. The two-year-old boy was pulled from the water at 8 p.m. Tuesday by adults at 123 West St. in Chatham.

“The little boy was visiting at a friend’s house and the friend’s family pulled him from the water and started CPR,” Chatham-Kent police Const. Doug Gutteridge said.

Emergency crews arrived at the home within three minutes of the 911 call. The boy was not breathing at the time.

Two minutes later, the boy was rushed to hospital and later flown to the Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario in London, where he was in critical condition yesterday.

Paramedics worked on the toddler intensively even after he arrived in hospital, said Gutteridge.

“We’re just hoping for the best,” he said.

Police don’t know how long the boy was in the water before he was noticed missing.

Investigators are probing how the boy fell into the above-ground pool.
