Defibrillators donated to fire, police

Published: September 29, 2004

San Joaquin Hospital donated two life-saving external defibrillators to Taft.

The Bakersfield hospital donated five automated external defibrillators to area organizations and one went to the Taft Fire Department and another went to the Taft Police Department.

The fire department already has two AEDs that are carried on each engine and the third will be put on a patrol, said Capt. Scott Hunter.

Sgt. Ed Whiting said AED donated to the police department will go into a patrol car once officers are trained to use it.

Officer Corey Beilby is scheduled to undergo training in October, Whiting said.

Automated defibrillators drastically increased the survival of heart attack victims.

While only a small percentage of people treated with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) recovered, 23 percent of heart attack victims treated with AEDs recovered and were released from hospital after treatment, according to San Joaquin Hospital officials.

The AED has already proven itself a lifesaver in Taft. It was used to restart a heart of a man going into cardiac arrest, Taft firefighters said.
