Children Reunited with Father after Bus Drama

Published: September 29, 2004

A father who watched his visiting children disappear on a bus as he bought tickets from a pavement machine has been reunited with them, police said today.

The 10-year-old girl and eight-year-old boy arrived in London from the Democratic Republic of Congo last Thursday, but vanished yesterday morning.

Police searched for them for almost 24 hours, but confirmed that they were discovered safe at 9am today.

The youngsters had disappeared on the bus, bound for Oxford Circus, at around 11am while their father looked on from the street.

Police had made checks with local hospitals, but said the children were discovered near Cambridge.

It is understood they were being cared for by local social services workers.

“The children and their father boarded the route 25 bus in Romford Road, Forest Gate, but the father then had to get off to buy a ticket from a machine,” said a police spokeswoman.

“He got off to do that at the bus stop at a junction with Woodgrange Road and as he did the bus drove off with the children still on board.”

Prisca Nzingo Basima and her brother, Joelle Kanga Basima, had been sent to Britain by their mother in DR Congo to be reunited with their father at his home in Forest Gate, east London.
