26 Indon fishermen rescued

Published: September 29, 2004

Filipino fishermen from this seaport city rescued 26 Indonesian fishers whose fishing vessel capsized after it was battered by heavy waves in the sea.

The Indonesian fishermen arrived Tuesday morning at the city’s fish port aboard a Gensan-based fishing vessel and where they were met by Philippine Coast Guard station chief Lt. Commander Oscar Endona.

Endona said that the fishing vessel of rescued Indons sank off North Sulawesi Sea last September 24.

The crew clutched on empty drums for about one and a half day until the Filipino fishermen passed by and rescued.

Two of the 26 Indons were suffering from minor ailments and were brought to a local hospital here for treatment.

They were then turned over to the city social welfare office, which immediately alerted the Indonesian consulate office in Davao City.
