Six years of love and smiles for Matthew
Published: September 28, 2004
Six years ago a baby boy was found in a nappy bag when he was only two days old. Today he is one of the happiest children around and wears the biggest smile a six-year-old can manage.
Matthew Morris was found abandoned in Khayelitsha in late September 1998 by the police, and was taken to social services for them to find him a home.
The co-ordinator at the time took him to the Heaven Shelter for Abused Women and Children in Beacon Valley where founder Zulpha Morris took him in. Soon after, she and her husband Abdul decided to adopt him.
“I adopted Matthew because he is so loving. God blessed me by making me loving and compassionate and that’s why I adopted him.
“When they brought him in and put him in my arms he felt like my own son and I just had to be the mother of this child,” said Morris.
He was found in September, but the department of home affairs recorded his date of birth June 21, 1998 and that’s the day he now celebrates his birthday.
Matthew shows no trace of his early trauma. He might be a bit shy but he is not scared to say how much he loves his parents and he cannot wait to go to the same school as his older brother.
“I want to go to Kiam’s school. I like to do karate with all the other children but I also like other sports.”
Morris said her own four children had accepted Matthew as their brother and that made him even more special.
“He has his good days and his naughty days but we have the same plans for him as we have for our own children and we just want to give him the best education,” she said.
Matthew is aware he is adopted.
“He is very much aware. Today we should be more open with our children and I did not want him to find out from other people. So when we talk about it, he listens,” said Morris.
