San Diego Race for the Cure Presents ‘Sleep In for the Cure’
Published: September 28, 2004
Komen San Diego Race for the Cure® presents an innovative opportunity for San Diegans to support the fight against breast cancer without getting out of bed — Sleep In for the Cure. For those San Diegans who are unable to participate in the Race on Sunday, November 7 in Balboa Park, Sleep In for the Cure provides a great way to show support for the cause without ever moving a muscle!
“When it comes to supporting breast cancer research, screening and education, people are often eager to do what they can to provide support, but they may be out of town on Race day or have other commitments that prevent them from participating in a 3.1 mile race,” said Rosalie Gerevas, Race Chair for the Komen San Diego Race for the Cure®. “Sleep In for the Cure provides people who are unable to make it to the Race with a unique opportunity to be a part of something that benefits the San Diego community and the fight against breast cancer.”
Sponsored by Jerome’s Furniture and Sleep Therapy, Inc., Sleep In for the Cure is the remedy for those supporters who are looking for an alternative way to participate without getting out of bed. “Sponsoring San Diego’s first Sleep In for the Cure event is a huge honor for us,” said Mike Malkiewicz, President of San Diego-based Sleep Therapy, Inc. “We encourage San Diegans who can’t make it to the Komen San Diego Race for the Cure® to show their support for the ongoing fight against breast cancer by sleeping in.”
All Sleep In for the Cure registrants receive a special Sleep In Race nightshirt that looks just like the regular Race T-shirt from the front, and displays the Sleep In for the Cure logo on the back. Sleep In for the Cure participants can also join an existing Race team as a Sleep In participant. The cost for the Sleep In for the Cure is $30; $5 more than the standard race entry due to the extra cost of mailing the Sleep In shirts to all participants. Proceeds from Sleep In for the Cure benefit the Komen Foundation with 75% of all proceeds remaining in San Diego for breast cancer education, screening and diagnosis. The remaining 25% supports national breast cancer research programs.

San Diegans can sign up for the November 7th Komen San Diego Race for the Cure®, or Sleep In for the Cure, at the San Diego Web site, or by calling In Motion at 760-692-2900.
The Komen Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Goodman Brinker in memory of her sister who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Brinker herself was diagnosed just two years later and has spent the past 18 years dedicating her life to finding a cure, hence — the Race for the Cure®.
The Komen Foundation is a national organization with a network of volunteers throughout local chapters and events across the country, fighting to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by research, education, screening and treatment. The Foundation is the largest private funder of research dedicated solely to breast cancer in the United States.
