Man rescued from boat stuck in marsh

A Brays Island man was rescued Sunday evening after his boat ran aground near the intersection of the Chechessee and Broad rivers, officials from Beaufort Water Search and Rescue Squad said.
Charles Fretz, 76, of Brays Island was on his way back home at about 11 a.m. Sunday when strong winds and the tides drove him into a marsh on the Chechessee, rescue squad spokesman David Barry said.
As winds and rain increased Sunday evening, search and rescue volunteers spotted Fretz’s vessel after he briefly flashed a signal light. Officials from the Coast Guard and the state Department of Natural Resources also assisted in the search.
Search and rescue found Fretz at about 8 p.m., Barry said. A Coast Guard helicopter took him to Hilton Head Regional Medical Center, where he refused treatment.
“He said he felt all right, then he went to Huddle House for something to eat and got a cab home,” Barry said.
