Friends, family rally for sick firefighter

Published: September 28, 2004

Friends and family of a local firefighter who has an inoperable brain tumor have joined forces to raise money to help his family spend time together.

Kevin Sherwood worked as a firefighter in both Summit and Grass Lake townships prior to his diagnosis of a brain tumor in May. Now, while his wife, Julie Sherwood, continues working as a surgery nurse at Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, Sherwood is spending his time with their five children who range in ages from 1 to 9 years old.

Close friends of the Grass Lake couple have been hosting fund-raisers to help them prepare financially for the future.

“Our intent is to provide a cushion for when the inevitable comes and Julie needs to be home,” said Robyn Scott, family friend and organizer of several successful fund-raisers. “We’ve established a savings account to be used when Julie takes time off from her job to be with Kevin and their kids.”

Scott is determined to help the family because she and Julie Sherwood have been “best of friends” since childhood, she said.

“Julie’s the sister I never had,” Scott said. “It’s been hard to accept what’s happening to her and her family, but she’s has been a rock through it all.”

To date, fund-raisers held for the family include a July 4 pancake breakfast, an August golf outing, and a concert with local band performances held Sept. 11 at Motorhead’s Bar & Grill, Michigan Center.

Numerous Grass Lake residents have volunteered with fund-raising efforts including Scott’s husband, Shawn Scott, Becky and Josh Grant and Wendy and John “Stubby” Southworth.

The Federated Church of Grass Lake is collecting monetary donations for the Sherwood family. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to: The Sherwood Family, c/o Federated Church of Grass Lake, 519 E. Michigan Ave., Grass Lake 49240.

With a little guidance from her grandma, Siera Jimenez is learning philanthropic ways at the age of 6.

The first-grade student at Townsend Elementary School recently donated 13 inches of hair to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to low-income children who suffer from medical hair loss.

Her Sept. 15 hair donation is the exact length of hair her grandmother Jean Logan donated to the nonprofit in 2000.

“My granddaughter was getting her hair cut for the first time, so I suggested she donate her hair like I did when she was just a baby,” Jean Logan said. “We’re real proud of her. The only thing is that Siera seems to think she has to go through Santa Claus to make her donation so she’s been telling everyone she gave her hair to Santa.”

Siera is the daughter of Marcie Jimenez and granddaughter of Jean and Joe Logan, all of Vandercook Lake.
