28% Crime rate drop

Whyalla has reduced its crime rate by 28 per cent in the past two and a half years.
The reduction has been most evident in areas such as property damage, vehicle crime and break-ins.
But although this figure might sound huge, Chief Inspector Jim Jefferey said that they must be looked at with respect to the population.
“These figures have to be kept in context because we are not dealing in large numbers like the metropolitan areas,” Inspector Jefferey said.
On Friday SA police Commissioner Mal Hyde congratulated Whyalla on its effort in this area when he addressed them.
“The Commissioner was impressed with the reduction of crime that we have achieved over the past couple of years,” Inspector Jefferey said.
The staff also heard about the introduction of a life-scan fingerprinting system, which will negate the manual fingerprinting system currently used.
This means that police will be able to scan a suspect’s fingerprints and automatically log into a national record database.
Commissioner Hyde also spoke about police resources and buildings, current corporate priorities for SAPOL and the latest enterprise bargaining agreement.
