Published: September 26, 2004
For weeks, eastern Iowa volunteers have been helping hurricane victims get back on their feet. Now hurricane relief is needed more than ever with Jeanne on her way.
At home, the Salvation Army helps eastern Iowans by providing shelter and a place to play. Thousands of miles away, eastern Iowa volunteers are helping hurricane victims.
Captain jerry O’Neil with the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Salvation Army is in Fort Walton, Florida. He says, “We started out serving meals in canteens.” He says he’s seen what all three hurricanes have left behind. Now, he’s waiting for Jeanne. “A lot of the people who were getting their lives in order and getting their stuff on board again are having to get all prepped again.”

The Salvation Army says it needs money. Lela Sheffler with the Salvation Army says, “It’s very badly needed and I understand Jeanne is on her way.”
The Salvation Army collects money for hurricane relief. The money buys food and supplies and helps victims rebuild. Something eastern Iowa volunteers stationed in Florida say victims desperately need.
O’Neil says, “A lot of people are shell shocked. Once you get done with one storm, another storm’s coming in and you just don’t know what to think anymore.”
O’Neil says eastern Iowa volunteers will stay in the south as long as relief is needed.
