Pedal power to help cancer charity

Published: September 25, 2004

Ulster people are being urged to ‘pedal push’ to raise bucket-loads of cash for young cancer victims across the province.

A ‘Pedal In the Park’ takes place in Belfast’s Ormeau Park tomorrow.

The unique fund-raising event is to be held in aid funds for Northern Ireland Leukaemia Research Fund.

Children from Belfast and beyond are being asked to participate in being sponsored to ride the planned and marshalled route of 1.5 km through the picturesque parkland of Ormeau Park.

Comedy actress Alexandra Ford, aka Dympna, from BBC NI’s Give My Head Peace will be getting the event under starters orders at 11am.

She said: “”Leukaemia is one of the most common forms of childhood cancer so this is a great way for kids to help other children less fortunate than themselves while having fun and getting fit too!

“Importantly all of the money raised will be used for research right here in Northern Ireland so there’s never been a better reason to get on your bike for charity”

A fun-filled morning of activities will include a special toddle-in-the-park route for younger participants as well as certificates of completion.

Organisers aim to raise over £10,000 for the charity.

A spokesperson for the committee of the Strabane branch says: “We want to encourage as many children as possible to participate.

“We can’t promise fine weather but this event will certainly provide a great morning of fun and activity for all the family.”
