Four-year-old donates hair

Published: September 24, 2004

Maggie Smith of Crawfordsville will have a new look for her school pictures next week. Wednesday afternoon, the 4 1/2-year-old had 10 inches of hair cut off to donate to Locks of Love.

“She has been looking forward to it for a long time,” said her mother, Sonya Smith. Also on hand for the haircut were Maggie’s father, Clyde Smith, and several other family members.

Maggie had been growing her hair since she was 3 years old. She was inspired by a hairdo her mother gave her, in which she put Maggie’s hair up in ponytails so it looked shorter. Sonya and Maggie thought the style looked cute on her.

They found out about Locks of Love through Leroy Haeffner, a Washington man who had donated his hair to the program during the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that uses donated hair to make hairpieces for financially disadvantaged children who have suffered from hair loss due to long-term medical problems. Maggie, who was very patient throughout her haircut, said she chose to donate her hair because she wants to “help other people.”
