Dog returned to family six years after disappearance

Published: September 22, 2004

Griffey has been the Sawyer family dog for about 7 years now. Even so, they’re just getting to know him.

You see, Griffey was stolen from the Sawyers six years ago.

“When we lost him it was really heartbreaking,” said Terry Sawyer.

After so many years had passed, the Sawyers never dreamed they’d see their dog again. But on Tuesday they got a call from the Everett Animal Shelter.

“And they said we have a dog here that has a microchip with your name on it,” said Terry. “And I went, Oh my goodness, it’s Griffey.”

Every animal that comes through the shelter is scanned to see if they have a microchip implanted. If they do, their I.D. will come up on the scanner.

“And we were able to make that positive identification years later. The dog had changed, they had changed, everything had changed but it still worked out very well for them,” said Bud Wessman of the Everett Animal Shelter.

“I was just very pleasantly surprised and just excited and elated and all those things,” said Terry.

“To me he looks exactly the same. He looks just like a grown-up version, I mean his face is exactly the same as it was,” said Alex Sawyer.

But a lot has changed in the six years Griffey has been gone. For starters, he’s no longer an only dog. Today, Griffey has two siblings.

And one thing is for sure, all four-legged members of the Sawyer family wear a microchip.

“Microchips obviously work,” said Terry.
