A long walk… for charity
Published: September 21, 2004
A Durban man, walking to raise fund for charity and to build his own mini jail, reached Pretoria on Tuesday and is now on his return journey.
Charles de Vos, 55, said he had undertaken the walk to raise awareness of crime victims and to gather money for 13 welfare organisations including the Police Widows and Orphans Fund.
Having started his trip from Scottburgh on September 8, de Vos said he hoped to finish his walk next Friday.
“It’s tough and I am pulling my own trailer that contains my clothes and briefcase,” he said.
De Vos, who works for In Power Concepts, also plans to spend the next year in an underground cell 2.5m high and 4.5m in diameter.
Needs R60 000
“It’s my little prison cell,” he said describing it affectionately. He said it would contain a toilet, shower, basin and bed and also have two extractor fans.
“M-Web will also be putting in an Internet system so that I will be monitored 24 hours a day,” he said.
He said the cell was almost complete but needed another R60 000 to finish.
“I am hoping some of the money I raise will help that project too,” he said adding that it was not about him looking for the limelight but to help charities.
De Vos said, some of the money would also be spent on building development centres for special crime victims and detention centres for juvenile criminals.
“I do believe young criminals should be punished for their crimes but should also be rehabilitated and given the opportunity to continue with their schooling,” he said.
De Vos, who left Pretoria on Tuesday morning en route to Delmas, east of Pretoria, for his overnight stop, said so far he had raised no money.
“Motorist have been supportive but I would not mind a little cash for my efforts,” he said.
