Jordanian hostage rescued in southern Iraq

Published: September 20, 2004

A Jordanian civil servant who was held hostage since last month was released Saturday in southern Iraq, the police said.

The hostage was rescued in an operation jointly launched by Iraqi security forces and national guards to the east of Nasiriyah, some 375 km south of Baghdad.

According to the hostage, he was kidnapped in August near Nasiriyah. But Jordan’s Foreign Ministry said it was not aware of his abduction and was checking with its embassy in Iraq.

Truck drivers were often targeted as hostages when insurgents in Iraq increasingly resorted to kidnapping as part of their campaign to drive out foreign forces and companies
