Injured tramper rescued

Published: September 20, 2004

A Palmerston North woman was airlifted out of the Tararua Ranges at first light today, after injuring her foot and ankle and spending the night in the bush.

The 46-year-old woman had been tramping northeast of Levin yesterday when she fell several kilometres from the nearest hut.

Her companion walked out of the area late last night and alerted Levin police, who called on the Square Trust rescue helicopter and a St John ambulance paramedic to collect the woman.

After a short search she was picked up about 7am today and flown to Palmerston North Hospital, a Square Trust statement said.
