Worker’s miracle escape
Published: September 18, 2004
A RAILWAY worker was left badly burned but lucky to be alive after touching power lines carrying 25,000 volts.
The miracle escape happened as the 38-year-old was working on a train roof at Carlisle’s Kingmoor Marshalling Yard at around 11.20am yesterday.
It is not clear how he came into contact with the overhead lines, but he was left with serious burns to his upper body and arm.
The man was working for Jarvis Rail, a national company that keeps and maintains vehicles at the yard.
Paramedics from the Great North Air Ambulance (GNAA) and Cumbria’s road ambulance service treated the man at the yard for his injuries.
He was then taken to the Cumberland Infirmary and later to the specialist burns unit at the Royal Victoria hospital in Newcastle.
