Anniversary is pure gold for charity

Published: September 17, 2004

FUNDRAISING rather than presents were on the mind of a couple celebrating their golden wedding anniversary.

Dick and Joan Evans collected £600 for charity at a party to mark their 50 years of marriage.

More than 100 members of their family and friends attended a party organised by their nieces at The Royal British Legion hall in Histon and gave donations to enter a game of bingo.

“People kept on about buying presents,” said Mr Evans, 78. “We said we still had presents from our silver wedding anniversary in the drawer. We said we would have a little game of bingo. It was a little bit of fun and we had a good laugh. Perhaps it will help other people to do the same.”

The money will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Relief in memory of friends and family who have suffered from the disease and the British Heart Foundation, a charity chosen by Mr Evans, who had a heart bypass operation at Papworth Hospital in 1984.

The couple, who met when they both worked at Chivers jam factory in Histon, were married at St Mary’s Church in Ely on September 11, 1954. A reception was held at the Women’s Institute followed by a week’s honeymoon in Great Yarmouth. They moved into their home in Woody Green, Girton, in 1958.

Their only child, Colin, tragically died in a drowning accident at Burton Mills when he was eight-years-old.

The secret of their marriage, they said, was being prepared to work through the tough times.

“The secret is to forgive each other of the little mistakes you make in life,” said Mr Evans, a member of Chesterton and Histon bowls clubs. “And to love each other and respect each other.”

Mrs Evans, 72, who enjoys bingo, added: “I once broke my shoulder and my wrist. I couldn’t do anything for myself. He had to do everything for me - he looked after me well.”
