The U.S. Coast Guard reports that a good Samaritan Monday helped rescue a pleasure boat that was taking on water about 5 miles north of Santa Cruz near an area known as Whalers Beach.
Lt. Jared King said the Coast Guard received a call about 2 p.m. Monday from a man, whose age and address are unknown, aboard the boat that was taking on water. The boat, called the Orca, is a 26-foot white vessel, and the man who called was the only person aboard.
The Coast Guard responded by sending a helicopter and a 47-foot patrol boat from Monterey.
But the first vessel to come to the help of the sinking boat was the Ever And Ever, a 52-foot boat with a Canadian flag, King said. The Santa Cruz harbormaster then arrived and is now towing the Orca to Santa Cruz. The man aboard the Orca was not injured, King said.
