Like an angel, a random act of kindness visited a Manitowoc family at the hospital recently.

Fifteen-year-old Lori Tollefson wrote about the experience in her letter, the August winning entry in the Random Acts of Kindness Contest, sponsored by U.S. Bank and the Herald Times Reporter.

Following is Tollefson’s story:

My father, mother and brother, Ryan, were in the waiting room of Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, waiting for the nurse to take Ryan in for surgery to remove a brain tumor.

While we were waiting, another man in the room came up to my parents and asked what Ryan was in for. When my parents told him, he asked if he could pray for Ryan and for us.

He prayed to God to keep Ryan and his family strong throughout the surgery. After he was done, he told Ryan that he, too, had problems with his brain and doctors told him he had only six months left to live.

The man also said that Ryan had his whole like ahead of him and to live it to the fullest.

After the surgery, my mother, father and Ryan thought that it was the nicest thing anyone could do for someone. My mother believes with all her heart that it was an angel sent from God to give us hope and confidence that everything would come out OK throughout his surgery and life.

When my mother said this, Ryan had the hope that God and one of his angels are always watching over him.
