Man rescued from ocean

Published: September 11, 2003

A New York City man was rescued in the ocean off St. Mary’s convent Wednesday by off-duty lifeguards and a firefighter from Cape May.

Dennis Rooba, 44, was unharmed by the mid-day incident and refused treatment after being brought ashore near Harvard Avenue.

The rescue, which included help from the New Jersey State Marine Police and the U.S. Coast Guard, actually began off Sunset Beach in Lower Township after a sailing device Rooba was using failed. Swift currents took him out into the rips off Cape May Point.

Lt. Jerry Inderwies Jr,. of the Cape May Fire Department, said Rooba was using a sail of some sort to pull himself through the water, although it was not a sailboat or a windsurfer.

Whatever it was, it got Rooba into trouble, and at 11:58 a.m. the Cape May Fire Department and Cape May Point Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1 responded. Cape May Firefighter Andy Boyt manned a paddleboard and headed into the surf. Boyt was joined by Lt. Jim Wadlow and Lt. Terry Randolph, two off-duty Cape May lifeguards. It took about 20 minutes to bring Rooba ashore, with help from the State Police.
