Hunters rescued after small plane crashes

Published 11 Sep. 2003

small plane with three people aboard crashed in northeast Alaska near the Canadian border, Alaska State Troopers said Thursday.

Troopers were notified shortly after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday that a Cessna 206F had crashed near the Coleen River, said trooper spokesman Greg Wilkinson.

Renald Crouin, 59, of Circle, was piloting the plane and it was carrying two hunters from Florida. Troopers were told that the hunters may have been injured in the crash.

Within a few hours, a medical helicopter from Fort Wainwright was sent to the crash site but had to return because of bad weather.

On Thursday at noon, Yukon Air Service out of Fort Yukon reported to troopers that it was able to land in the area and the hunters were flown to Fairbanks for medical treatment. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

The hunters identities were being withheld until families could be notified.

Yukon Air Service was making arrangements to pick up the pilot or have more gear dropped off.
