Dog saved from shelter repays family

Published: September 11, 2003

A dog rescued from an animal shelter by a family here has repaid the favor, helping save her owners from a fire that destroyed their home.

Barbara Woolfolk, 59, was living with her disabled daughter, Sigelle Woolfolk, and Sigelle’s three boys, ages 11, 4 and 2, when a fire broke out Aug. 30.

The fierce barking of Zoey, a 4-year-old Akita, alerted the family to the 5 a.m. fire. Zoey then helped drag Sigelle Woolfolk to safety, the family told the Press & Sun-Bulletin of Binghamton.

Barbara Woolfolk adopted the dog two years ago from an animal rescue shelter.

“I’m very grateful for that dog,” Sigelle Woolfolk said. “She would have died saving us.”

Sigelle Woolfolk was trying to get out of the burning house when Zoey came to her aid. The dog let the 27-year-old hook her hand in the dog’s collar and helped pull her down the stairs, out the front door and down a handicap ramp.

Zoey then ran back into the house, apparently looking for the 2-year-old, who was sleeping at a friend’s house, Barbara Woolfolk said. Zoey came out only after Barbara Woolfolk called her name several times.

Binghamton Fire Bureau Capt. Daniel Eggleston said Woolfolk told him the story the day of the fire.

Zoey is staying at The Humane Society in Binghamton while her owners look for a new home. The family won’t relocate anywhere without Zoey, Barbara Woolfolk said.
