Unfortunate deer helped

Published: September 8, 2003

A whitetailed buck that fell in a manhole on Charles Street in Wakefield survived, thanks to help from the Gogebic County animal control officer and Wakefield city workers.

They pulled the deer from the unfortunate position Saturday morning.

Animal control officer George Beninghaus shot the buck with a tranquilizer. It took about 10 minutes for the drug to take effect, then the workers moved the animal to a safe location.

The drug started to wear off about an hour later, but the buck didn’t move for several hours. He was gone the next morning.

The animal control officer said it appeared the manhole cover was broken. When the deer stepped on it, the cover went up and the deer slid down, he said.
