New Drug to Cure Diabetes
Published: September 8, 2003
People suffering from diabetes can now sigh with relief, thanks to a new drug that could cure the disease.
The drug hOKT3G1 is designed to disable the specific T-cells that orchestrate destruction of insulin-producing islet cells.
Researchers from Columbia University and the University of California, San Francisco have so far tested the new drug on rats and mice but are positive it could offer an alternative to insulin.
It was developed by mutating a portion of the antibody so that it does not activate T-cells, thus avoiding the release of aggressive inflammatory cytokines of the immune system.
It was “humanised” by fusing certain parts of a mouses antibody with that of a human antibody to retain the desired binding specifically without provoking an immune response as a mouse’s antibody would.
