Man Rescued from Burning Home

Published: September 8, 2003

A man who survived after being trapped inside a burning home in southeast Atlanta thanked his rescuers Monday.

When firefighters arrived, police officers and neighbors were helping a wheelchair-bound woman escape the fast-moving flames at a home on Gilbert Street. The woman told authorities a man was still trapped inside.

Firefighters found the man on the floor in a back bedroom.

“The smoke was so thick you could not see a flashlight in front your eyes, the smoke was all the way to the ground,” said Captain William Wyant of Atlanta Fire and Rescue.

The woman suffered slight smoke inhalation and the man suffered burns to his hands and back.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
