Game Warden Saved Deputy By Shooting Suspect
Published: September 8, 2003
An Alabama game warden saved the life of a Morgan County sheriff’s deputy by shooting and killing a man who opened fire on police last week, Sheriff Greg Bartlett said.
The warden, whose name was withheld pending the investigation, shot James Elvin Hill, 44, after Hill shot deputy Michael McCoy twice.
Hill died at Huntsville Hospital after surgery. McCoy was in stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Police were dispatched to Hill’s residence Friday evening after neighbors complained about a man with a gun causing a disturbance.
Bartlett said Hill came out of his house with a 12-gauge shotgun and opened fire, grazing McCoy’s head. Hill went back into his house and returned moments later, Bartlett said, shooting McCoy in the arm.
That’s when the warden, who was at the scene as backup, shot Hill in the stomach.
The Limestone County Sheriff’s Department is investigating, Bartlett said.
McCoy has been a full-time employee in Morgan County since 2002.
“He is a good officer, and gutsy,” Bartlett said. “These guys lay their lives on the line for very little pay. It’s something they’ve got to love to do.”
