84 rescued from Pikes

Published 8 Sep. 2003

A group of 84 hikers were rescued from Pikes Peak after a sudden snowstorm moved in Sunday afternoon.

Their day started with rain, but as the hikers moved up the mountain, they encountered blinding fog and snow. Two of the hikers started to show signs of hypothermia.

There was one young lady who was very cold. We just kept her warm and kept her moving to the top. She was never in danger with altitude sickness, but definitely very cold, hike organizer David Hasz said.

An ambulance, park rangers and a search and rescue team waited for the hikers at the summit and were able to get everyone safely off the mountain.
