$1.4 Million Donated to Boys and Girls Club

The Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula and Oracle Corp. announced that the Oracle “Help Us Help” Foundation has donated $1.4 million to support the Boys and Girls Club (BGCP) of the San Francisco Peninsula. The grant will provide direct support to BGCP’s innovative Academic Program, helping members achieve measurable academic progress while supporting local schools and communities.
“The Academic Program supports our members and our local school systems not only with the computer assisted learning program but also with homework assistance and individualized tutoring that all focus on the academic basics. It also delivers a host of other academic enrichment activities. Our Academic Program enables our members to achieve measurable academic progress, increase their self-esteem & confidence, and develop a real love of learning. This is a wonderful addition to our art, athletic, technology and social education programs,” said Jacqueline Glaster, executive director of BGCP.
In addition to providing support for the BGCP’s Academic Program, the Oracle Foundation grant will also institute new programs that teach students to use technology for project-based learning and fun. Moreover, these new programs will encourage members to explore future career opportunities in high technology. Included in this initiative are SuccessMaker, a highly individualized, computer assisted learning program that assists students to measurably improve their math, reading and spelling skills; the implementation of ThinkQuest, one of the Oracle Foundation’s core programs, which engages teams of youth in developing websites on educational subjects; and the establishment of the Oracle Internet Academy at two Peninsula facilities to introduce students to data-modeling, SQL and Java programming, and general business skills that they can use in their future academic pursuits and careers.
The recently enhanced BGCP Academic Program was piloted last year at Boys & Girls Club of the Peninsula’s Menlo Park Clubhouse. The Oracle Foundation grant will enable the program to be expanded to the East Palo Alto and Redwood City clubhouses and 400 active participants by 2004/2005.
