On Saturday they were back in Onalaska to help raise money with about 200 motorcyclists at the inaugural Tri-State Thunder Ride to Cure Diabetes.
The event, sponsored by Harley-Davidson shops in Onalaska, Winona, Minn., and Waukon, Iowa, was open to all bikes. Routes were used from each dealership, ending at Good Times Restaurant in Caledonia, Minn. The riders raised about $6,000, organizers said.
“I don’t even want to think about it,” Paul Callan said when he was asked about the miles he had put on his bike in recent weeks.
But the good cause, nice weather and time spent on the motorcycle brought the Callans and others out for the afternoon.
Since purchasing their 1999 Honda Valkyrie in late July, Steve and Julie Hajewski have enjoyed logging quite a few miles on their bike.
“We like to ride and saw a brochure,” Steve Hajewski said. “We thought we would check it out.”
“It’s a beautiful day for a ride,” Julie said. “There won’t be too many (days) left to do so.”
Event coordinator John Haverty of Caledonia said he hopes the ride will become an annual event. “There are
17 million diabetics in America. Everyone knows somebody with diabetes,” he said. “(Diabetes) effects so many people, it is just a natural for fund-raising.”
Haverty hopes the funds raised will be able to assist in finding a cure for his 6-year-old son, Joey, who is diabetic.
“If we find a cure for Joey, we find a cure for everybody,” he said.
