12 Rescued After Boat Capsizes in River

Published: September 7, 2003

Ten passengers and two crew members were safely rescued and brought back to shore after a boat overturned in the East River early Sunday morning, authorities said.

The 30-foot pleasure boat went down near Pier 17 at South Street Seaport, not far from the Brooklyn Bridge, at about 4:15 a.m., authorities said.

The vessel, believed to have originated in Jersey City, N.J., was cruising through the East River and tried to turn around when it apparently struck some unknown object in the water, police said. The boat started flooding and sank quickly.

Police and fire department boats responded to the area after a witness reported the incident. Four people were found under the Brooklyn Bridge on the Manhattan side, apparently after swimming to shore. The others were rescued by emergency workers.

Police said some of them were wearing life preservers. The victims were taken to Bellevue and NYU Downtown Hospitals and treated for minor injuries and hypothermia.

Officials were investigating whether alcohol was a factor, but said early Sunday there was “no indication of misconduct on the part of the captain or anyone else.”

“They’re very lucky that they got out of this,” police Deputy Inspector Timothy Donovan said.

Police and Coast Guard authorities were attempting to locate the sunken boat.
