Wandering bear rescued from Socorro back yard

A terrifying incident came to a terrific end Friday morning on Evergreen Street in Southwest Socorro. This male bear was traveling with another when they got separated and he ended up in a resident’s tree. Police officers were called in, along with the Game and Fish Department’s Chris Neary.
Neary waited for the bear to come down on his own, but the bear seemed to like it in the tree, so Neary used a tranquilizer dart to put the bear to sleep. Neary said the tranquilizer is used only as a last resort, because he didn’t want the young bear to get hurt if he fell from the tree.
Fortunately, the bear was positioned in the tree where he didn’t fall. Socorro Electric Co-op was called in and, with the help of operator David Montoya and a cherry picker, Neary rescued the bear and it was lowered to the ground without injury. The bear was tagged and held for observation in a portable cage at the site. Once he is determined to be OK, he will be released back into the wild
